To celebrate the 10th anniversary of their introduction, six of the seven British Concordes were assembled at London’s Heathrow Airport on January 21, 1986. The Concorde entered service on January 21, 1976, flying routes from London to Bahrain and Paris to Rio de Janeiro (via Dakar).

The fact that one of these could have been that Concord is sad.

So this was taken exactly 6 days before I was born. Can’t believe those planes were ten years old by then.

What you can’t see is the DC-10 just out of frame in front of the lead Concorde. That’s what the other 5 are hiding from.

Such a beautiful aircraft. I’ve had the pleasure of visiting the final resting place of three of the aircraft. Concorde, like the SR-71 or XB-70 is imposing, exotic, sexy, and mysterious all at the same time.

I’ve only seen the one at the Udvar-Hazy Center in VA. I think you description is spot on, and I can’t add to it.

I was too young to appreciate it, probably 5 or 6. My sister married an Englishman, and I got to fly over on one for her wedding. Got to see a cockpit sunrise and the whole bit...it’s funny how common that used to be (letting kids see the cockpit), never after 9/11.

Letting kids inside the cockpit is not gone, at least at the gate. I’ve flown a couple of times with my boys, and we were invited into the cockpit each time (on Southwest, at least). On one visit, the captain showed the kids the “machine gun” by activating the stick shaker. Still, it’s a far cry from when I was young. I remember one flight out of Chicago when I was probably about 10 when my older brother and I got to go into the cockpit before the flight and the captain let us push the throttles forward during push back. Now THAT is something that will never happen again. As for your trip, you may not remember much of it, but you can say that you flew on one of the true great airliners that has ever been built. That list isn’t terribly long.

Given that they were BA ones, it couldn’t have been.
